In brief: Gideon Memorial is an informational art and memorial website. We do not sell personal information, offer online purchasing, accept online donations, or use personal information for targeted advertising. We collect only the limited information needed to operate and secure the website and to respond when someone chooses to contact the Gideon family archive.
About this policy
This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you visit gideonmemorial.org (the “Website”) or communicate with the Gideon family archive about Elmo Gideon, his artwork, the collection, exhibitions, provenance, permissions, or donations. In this policy, “Gideon Memorial,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to the family archive responsible for the Website.
Information you choose to provide
The Website does not currently provide a public contact form, visitor account registration, public commenting, online store, ticketing system, or online donation processing. If you choose to contact Heather Gideon by email, your email provider and the recipient’s email provider will process the information you include, such as your name, email address, message, photographs, artwork details, provenance information, and any other material you voluntarily send.
Donations described on the Website are sent by postal mail to the Gideon Museum. Please do not send payment-card information, government identification numbers, medical information, or other highly sensitive information by email.
Information collected automatically
When you visit the Website, the hosting provider and standard internet infrastructure may automatically process technical information needed to deliver, protect, and maintain the Website. This may include:
- Internet Protocol address and approximate location derived from it;
- browser, device, and operating-system information;
- date and time of access;
- pages, images, files, and links requested;
- referring page or website; and
- security, diagnostic, and error-log information.
We use this information to display the Website, maintain availability, diagnose technical problems, prevent misuse, protect the archive, and understand general website performance. As of the effective date, Gideon Memorial does not intentionally use this information to build advertising profiles or conduct targeted advertising.
Cookies and local technologies
WordPress and the hosting environment may use cookies or similar local technologies that are necessary for security, administration, preferences, and reliable operation. Administrative login cookies apply to authorized website managers. Most visitors can browse the public Website without creating an account or signing in.
You can use browser controls to delete or block cookies. Blocking essential technologies may affect parts of the Website or administrative functions. Gideon Memorial does not currently use cookies for behavioral advertising or the sale of personal information.
Artwork, images, and information you send
If you email photographs or documents concerning an artwork, those files may contain metadata, including dates, device information, or location data. Remove metadata you do not wish to share before sending a file. We may retain correspondence and materials when reasonably needed to respond, identify or document a work, maintain provenance records, evaluate a request, preserve archive history, protect legal rights, or meet legal obligations.
How we use information
We may use information to:
- respond to questions about the collection, provenance, exhibitions, research, permissions, or donations;
- identify, document, preserve, and administer works associated with Elmo Gideon;
- operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Website;
- detect fraud, abuse, security threats, or technical failures;
- maintain appropriate business, archival, and legal records; and
- comply with law and protect the rights, safety, and property of the family archive, visitors, and others.
When information may be shared
We do not sell personal information. We may disclose limited information:
- to hosting, website-maintenance, email, backup, security, and other service providers that need the information to perform services for us;
- to professional advisers when reasonably necessary for legal, archival, provenance, rights, tax, insurance, or security matters;
- when you ask or authorize us to share it;
- to comply with law, legal process, or a valid governmental request; or
- when reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, property, the integrity of the archive, or the security of the Website.
Service providers and external resources
The Website is built with WordPress and uses hosting, gallery, migration, maintenance, and security services to operate. A provider may process technical information subject to its own terms and privacy practices. The Website also loads the Netphiles logo from netphiles.com; when that image loads, Netphiles’ server may receive ordinary request information such as your IP address, browser information, referring page, and access time.
The Website contains links to third-party websites and may link to documents, media, or services controlled by others. Their privacy and security practices are governed by their own policies. A link does not mean Gideon Memorial controls or endorses a third party’s privacy practices.
Data retention
We retain information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, including responding to requests, preserving appropriate archive and provenance records, maintaining backups, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements, protecting the Website, and meeting legal obligations. Retention periods vary according to the type and purpose of the information. Technical logs and backups may remain for a limited period under hosting and security-provider schedules.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures intended to protect the Website and information under our control. No internet transmission, email system, or storage method is completely secure. Please use care when deciding what information to send electronically.
Children’s privacy
The Website is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13. A parent or guardian who believes a child has provided personal information may contact us to request review and appropriate deletion.
Your privacy choices and requests
Depending on where you live and subject to applicable law, you may have rights concerning personal information we hold about you, such as requesting access, correction, deletion, or restriction. To make a request, email Heather Gideon at ByHeather@aol.com. We may need information to verify your identity and locate relevant records. We may retain information when permitted or required by law or when needed for legitimate archival, security, legal, or recordkeeping purposes.
Because the Website does not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, there is no sale or targeted-advertising opt-out required for ordinary use of the Website. Browser “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control signals do not change the Website’s functionality as of the effective date.
Visitors outside the United States
The Website and family archive are operated in the United States. If you visit from another country or send information to us, information may be processed and stored in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your location.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the Website, archive practices, service providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top of the page identifies the current version. Material changes should be reviewed before publication and recorded in the website change log.
